Tunnel Passes

Tunnel passes in youth soccer training.

Field size: 20 yards by 20 yards

Number of players: full team in groups of three

Age range: 6-8

Description: Groups of three with one player in the middle with his or her legs open like a tunnel.  The two other players stand on either side of the player in the middle and take turns and try to pass the ball through the player’s legs.  Players stand about five to ten yards away from the player in the middle to start, and then move a little further away as they get more accurate.  Passes have to be made low on on the ground and below the knees, of course.

See if players can connect a series of passes through the player’s legs and see which pair of players gets the most passes without the ball touching the player in the middle’s legs.

If a player misses or hits the player acting as the tunnel in the middle, then they switch roles – the player who missed becomes the player in the middle acting like the tunnel. Have players working on passing the ball with the inside of the right and left foot.

Another game that’s good for working on passing the ball through a players legs is the freeze tag game.

Equipment needed: Cones and practice vests.
