Jozy Altidore squares the soccer ball across the box to a wide open Chris Wondolowski, who skies the ball up and over the goal. What’s more, it looks like Clint Dempsey was right there to knock the ball into the goal but let Wondolowski take the shot since all he had to do was tap the ball into the wide open net.
I don’t think Wondolowski will get a better chance than this playing for the United States national team. The United States ended up losing this Gold Cup match versus Panama 2-1. Everyone is wondering, how come Edson Buddle and Herculez Gomez weren’t called into the national team? Now, with this miss by Wondo, they’re wondering even more what Bob Bradley was thinking with his forward selection. However, players deserve a second chance, and perhaps Wondolowski was just nervous, and will score some big goals in the coming Gold Cup games, if he gets another shot with the team. Wondolowski World Cup Open Goal Miss Against Belgium Update: Sadly, Chris Wondolowski misses a clear chance in the World Cup against Belgium similar to the above chance. At this moment in the World Cup game it was 0-0, with only stoppage time remaining. If Wondo scores this chance, the United States would have moved on to play Argentina in the quarter finals. Instead, they lose in extra time and are out of the World Cup. Can’t blame Wondolowski entirely, but wow, what a chance and what a miss this was..Dempsey looks like he’s calling for the soccer ball here too. To his credit, Wondo tweeted this message out after the game:
