Liverpool Style of Play

What is Liverpool’s style of play. A big party of Liverpool’s style of play is its pressing defense when they lose the soccer ball. This pressing is called gegenpressing. What is Gegenpressing? Gegenpressing means to press the opposition right after losing possession. Really though, Liverpool play with a joy and passion – a desire to win that’s clear from every player at every position on the field. And now, Liverpool is once again becoming one of the most popular football clubs in the world once again.

We take a look at Liverpool’s set-up under Jurgen Klopp, and how the team use the counter-pressing system to deadly effect.

This evolves into a style based on a lot of counter-presses and counter-attacks. But overall, Liverpool is still a possession oriented team. They want to keep the ball but they do attack relentlessly. They play the ball very quickly and often switch the field of play using their outside defenders to swing the ball from one side of the field to the other.

In fact, by looking through specific defensive metrics, it becomes clear that Liverpool are not necessarily pressing less, but rather pressing with more variation and shrewdness. The statistic which proves this is PPDA (Passes allowed Per Defensive Action). Put simply, this enables us to quantify the intensity of a side’s press by assessing the number of passes allowed to the opposition before a defense engages in action through a tackle, interception, or foul.

From Jurgen Klopp’s first game in charge of Liverpool nearly three years ago, it was obvious his Liverpool would be about energy, pressing and quick attacking. Now, he appears close to perfecting his approach. Improvements in defensive personnel mean Liverpool can play a high line with few problems; strength in depth has allowed the midfielders to become more energetic; and up front there’s Europe’s most cohesive front trio of Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

Klopp’s Liverpool tactics.

In today’s video, I’ve discussed in detail, Liverpool’s offensive and defensive organizations of this season under Jurgen Klopp. I made a video on Liverpool’s pressing a few months ago and you can watch that video here:

Never walk alone. After every soccer game the crowd sings this song.
