Nate Jaqua deserves a call up to the United States national team. He last played for the full team in 2006. With all the MLS teams he’s played for, from Chicago to Houston to Seattle, the big man has shown the ability to score goals pure and simple. He’s nimble on his feet and strong in the air. He is the Peter Crouch of the MLS. But what has helped Jaqua and the Seattle Sounders reach a new level is his partnership with Columbian Fredy Montero. Montero is on loan from Deportivo Cali and was off to a blazing start for the Sounders, scoring twice in the first three matches. However, this came to a halt when he was accused of sexual assault. No charges were filed but it must have been tough for the 21 year old to deal with this having just arrived at his new club. He has since regained his form and his on the same wavelength partnership with Jaqua is clear. Montero is a unique talent. He’s quick, clever and a deceptive passer of the ball. You don’t know what he’s going to do. In the video below, Jaqua and Montero combine on three different occasions, but the way Montero leaves the ball for Jaqua on the last goal is pefect. He touches the ball just enough to force the defender to stop for a moment and Jaqua is able to have a clean look on goal.
For the Sounders though, it’s not just this duo but the growing impact of Ljungberg, Keller, and Sebastien Le Toux that make them look like a potential MLS championship team. The Sounders are becoming a fabled side and they just joined the league. It might be tough to keep this duo intact though. It wouldn’t be surprising to see both Jaqua and Montero scooped up by European sides. Montero was already a prospective signing of Real Betis in La Liga. And Jaqua, who had a stint at SC Rheindorf Altach in Austria, isn’t afraid to travel or leave a team. |
