Kamara Nears Donovan’s Goal Record

Kamara Nears Donovan's Goal Record

Kamara goal scoring record: Can Kei Kamara top Landon Donovan’s MLS goal scoring total? And if Kamara does he certainly deserves a raise.

Kamara is a true footballer. Someone who has had a long journey of a soccer career. He’s played in Finland and Orange Country and nearly every MLS team. He moved to the United States from Sierra Leone when he was 16.

In truth, he’s played for 11 different MLS teams and the Columbus Crew twice, and a few English Premier league teams to boot, in Norwich City and Middlesbrough.

Overall, Kamara loves a good goal celebrations. And he’s scored a lot of goals so there are a lot of celebrations. Kamara has scored 144 goals so far in his MLS career.

On YouTube you’ll see Kamara get a yellow card for twerking after scoring. Once he even pulled out a white glove after scoring to honor Michael Jackson. Then there’s his ridiculous bicycle kick goal against one of his old MLS teams – he has many of course.

Kamara is 39 years old now. Not sure how many more games and goals he’ll score. Right now he is just two goals away from topping Landon Donovan’s total of 145, who is the second-highest goalscorer in MLS history. What is surely out of reach, unless Kamara plays well into his forties, is Chris Wondolowski leading MLS goal total of 171.

Moreover, as he talked about in the video below, Kamara would be overtaking Donovan’s second place goal scoring total while wearing an archrival jersey, the black of LAFC instead of the LA Galaxy colors Donovan wore.

The only players who might catch Donovan, Kamara and even Wondolowski, are two current MLS forwards, Gyasi Zardes with 103 goals and Jesus Ferreira with 50 goals. Ferreira is just 23 years old, so he has plenty of time to score more MLS goals.

Something that jumps out though this year is Kamara’s salary. It is low. Kamara’s salary is $89,716 per year. Mls players close to his age, 38 to 39 years old, like Diego Chara, Brad Guzan and Stephan Frei make five times Kamara’s salary – each making around $500,000 per year.

Kamara salary with LAFC

I’m not saying Kamara is Cristiano Ronaldo like, but they are both 39 year old forwards. Plus, they both score goals for their teams, but with quite different salaries and levels of fame. Ronaldo has over 629 million instagram followers. Kamara has a decent number for an MLS player, let’s say, in over 100,000. Oh, and Ronaldo made $200 million from his club contract with Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia.

At least Kamara should get a hefty bonus if he tops Donovan’s goal record from LAFC. Or even from the league itself. His current salary of around 90K per year just doesn’t seem right, given his long track record of scoring goals in Major League Soccer.

However, with French striker Olivier Giroud joining LAFC, it will be hard for Kamara to get time on the soccer pitch, I would imagine.

Who knows though, in just one or two runs on the field for LAFC, Kamara could bag two or three goals in a goal scoring streak. He’s deadly on corners and crosses. Let’s hope Kamara goal scoring record tops Donovan’s soon.

Update: Kamara moves past Donovan with 146 goals.
