MLS Playoffs Explained: Qualification, Format, and Teams to Watch

The MLS playoffs bring 18 of the league’s 30 teams into a knockout tournament that runs from November 18 to MLS Cup on Friday, December 18, 2026. The top nine teams in each conference qualify, seeds 8 and 9 meet in a one-game Wild Card, and Round One is a best-of-3 series. Here is how it all works, plus the teams to watch as of early October 2026.

How Teams Qualify

MLS is split into the Eastern and Western Conferences, with 15 teams each. At the end of the regular season, which finishes on Decision Day, Saturday, November 7, the top nine teams in each conference make the playoffs.

  • Seeds 1 to 7 go straight into Round One.
  • Seeds 8 and 9 play a single Wild Card match, hosted by the No. 8 seed. The winner advances to face the No. 1 seed.

The Supporters’ Shield goes to the team with the most points across the whole league. The MLS Cup host is the finalist that finished higher in those standings.

The 2026 MLS Playoff Format

Wild Card (Wednesday, November 18)

One game, win or go home. It comes right after the November 8-17 FIFA international window, so national team players will be returning just before kickoff.

Round One Best-of-3 (November 20 to December 2)

This is the part that confuses many fans. Round One is not two legs with an aggregate score. It is a series of separate games, and the first team to win two games advances.

  • Game 1 is hosted by the higher seed.
  • Game 2 is hosted by the lower seed, so all 16 teams play at least one home playoff game.
  • Game 3, if needed, returns to the higher seed.
  • Any game tied after 90 minutes goes straight to a penalty shootout, with no extra time. The shootout winner wins that game.

Conference Semifinals, Conference Finals and MLS Cup

From there it is single elimination. Conference Semifinals are December 5-6, Conference Finals December 11-12, and MLS Cup is Friday, December 18. According to MLS, this will be the last MLS Cup played in December before the league moves to a summer-to-spring calendar.

Teams to Watch (as of Early October 2026)

Nashville SC

Nashville clinched a playoff place on September 19 and leads the East and the Supporters’ Shield race with 60 points from 27 games, per the Fox Sports standings. Striker Sam Surridge led the Golden Boot race with 16 goals as of mid-September, Hany Mukhtar remains a key creator, and the team had the league’s best defense at that point. Nashville won the 2025 U.S. Open Cup under coach B.J. Callaghan.

Vancouver Whitecaps

Last year’s MLS Cup runners-up lead the West with 50 points from 26 games. Vancouver lost the 2025 final 3-1 to Inter Miami.

Inter Miami

The defending champions sit third in the East on 46 points, level with New England, and remain the team everyone wants to beat.

The Western Conference logjam

St. Louis CITY SC and FC Dallas (47 points each), San Jose (45) and Houston (44) are separated by a handful of points, so home field in Round One is wide open.

The Wild Card races

In the East, Red Bull New York, New York City FC and FC Cincinnati were all on 33 points, with Cincinnati holding a game in hand. In the West, Colorado and the LA Galaxy were on 36, just ahead of Portland, Real Salt Lake and San Diego FC on 32. Red Bull New York fans will be watching 18-year-old forward Julian Hall, a 2026 MLS All-Star. For more on the league’s contenders, see our MLS predictions: favorites and underdogs.

What Young Players Can Learn From the Playoffs

Knockout soccer rewards players who stay composed when every mistake is costly. Watch a playoff game with these questions in mind:

  1. Who wants the ball under pressure? The best players keep asking for it even when the game is tense.
  2. How do wingers create chances against packed defenses? Look for changes of speed and 1v1 moves rather than hopeful crosses.
  3. How do penalty takers prepare? Note their routine, their run-up and whether they look at the keeper.

Practice game: Best-of-3 1v1 Series

Pair players up in a 10 x 15-yard grid with a small goal at each end. Each “game” lasts 60 seconds; first to win two games takes the series. If a game is tied, settle it with one penalty each. It adds playoff pressure to 1v1 practice and rewards players who attack with confidence. Our Coerver moves to beat any opponent give players a toolbox to try.
