Alex Morgan Joins Olympique Lyonnais

Alex Morgan said she signed for French team Olympique Lyonnais because she wants to get better and become the best female soccer player in the world. Morgan signed a six month contract with Lyon, not sure how much she’s being paid. It’s not like Beckham coming to the MLS, but I’m sure a lot of Lyon fans will be buying up Alex Morgan Lyon jerseys…

It might be surprising to Morgan just how much the media follow her while she’s on and off the field in Lyon. In America, while women’s soccer is growing, it’s not at the level of soccer in Europe. I think you’d have to say the women’s soccer, for at least the top clubs, is better than the soccer played in the U.S.

She’ll also record a web series about her life in Lyon while she’s there. I’m sure there will a lot of attention paid to Morgan while she’s in France by the media in general.

What happens if Morgan likes life in France so much that she wants to stay? I’m guessing her time in France will not only make her a better soccer player but certainly increase her salary with her club team in Orlando. They’ll just have to pay her more money to keep her.

U.S. women’s national team player Megan Rapinoe of course played for Olympique Lyonnais for six months, earning in the range of $14,000 per month. I’m sure Morgan is making at least this much.

What’s great in this interview is how Morgan talks about how she wants to improve as a player and grow the women’s game. I think she’s right that there’s less pressure playing in Lyon. While all eyes will be on her, she’s surrounded by other top level players. I’m sure once she scores that first goal for Lyon she’ll be off and running.
