Marta’s Extra Time Goal Versus USA

In the first period of extra time during a 2011 Women’s World Cup match between USA and Brazil, Brazilian forward Marta scores an amazing almost no look goal, as she sort of clipped/volleyed the ball into the far post. But was her teammate offsides?

Marta, the five time world player of the year, has always been some what a nemesis for the United States team. Her speed, touch on the soccer ball and craftiness, got the better of the U.S. team in the World Cup in China when she went on a dribbling run.

What’s amazing about Marta, is despite the boos and whistles raining down on her during the match from the German fans, she played with a reckless abandon, trying to will her team to win and slicing through the U.S. defense time after time. It was not to be though, of course. The fans whistles and boos were in large part to Marta’s greatness, maybe her feigning of injury a time or two, her demanding nature, and also some sympathy for the U.S. team perhaps, after the poor call on the Hope Solo penalty kick. The Germans seemed to be cheering for the underdog, the team with ten players after the red card.
