Ian Russel Joins Galaxy

Russell, a stand out midfielder for the San Jose Earthquakes, and won a few titles with them, comes out of a semi-retirement and was picked up by his former coach and promptly started the first game at fullback no less. The midfielder from Seattle attended the University of Washington and also played for the Seattle Sounders. With the nickname E-Dog, this speedster will get to play with Beckham and join a side that has aspirations to be the team to beat and the golden child of the MLS. A nice gig.

The Los Angeles Galaxy claimed longtime San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Ian Russell off waivers Monday.

The 31-year-old Russell played in 131 games in six seasons for the Earthquakes, and helped them win two MLS Cup championships. He had five goals and nine assists before retiring prior to the 2006 season.

“Ian is a player that I know very well from our time in San Jose and that I have tremendous respect for,” Yallop told AP. “He is a true professional and a proven winner who will play an important role in this club’s success in 2007.”
