Clint Mathis Goal Versus South Korea

Where does Clint Mathis fit in terms of best United States soccer players of all-time? He has to be up there. Mathis, who is set to retire from the MLS this weekend, will go down as one of the smoothest players in the league. He wasn’t afraid to try to do unexpected or and often scored big and important goals. Here’s one of the biggest goals he scored in his career, against South Korea in the 2002 World Cup.

Mathis, sporting a mohawk, takes a wonderful cross from O’Brien, controls it with one touch and and hammers it into the net with the other. He had one of the most dangerous left foots in the MLS, and scored some incredible volleys in his time. And for Clint Mathis to score this goal with the mohawk really says it all about his quality and confidence.

“It has been an amazing and exciting ride, full of moments and people that will stay with me forever,” he said. “I cannot thank everyone who has been a part of this journey with me enough for all that you have done to help me enjoy such a fulfilling life in the sport of soccer.”
