Avram Grant Takes Over Chelsea

Avram Grant Takes Over Chelsea

With the Special One now gone, sadly, Avram Grant becomes the new boss of Chelsea, and his first challenge, Manchester Untited and the Theatre of Dreams.  And, this is without Lampard and Drogba, who are both injuried.  A group of fans stood outside of Chelsea’s club and cheered on Jose Mourinho, wishing Jose was still the boss.  Chelsea hadn’t won the EPL in 50 years before Jose came along.

Really, the legend of Jose first begin when he beat Manchester United in the Champions league.  A late goal that deflected off of the wall and beat the American goalkeeper Tim Howard.

But the big question:  who is Avram Grant?  Or at least that’s what I was wondering.

A few key points of interest:

  • Israel’s most successful coaches
  • former mentor of the Israel national team
  • never played professionally
  • turned to coaching at a young age for the youth team of Hapoel Petah Tikva, his hometown club
  • assistant to Harry Redknapp at Portsmouth
  • technical director of Portsmouth
  • Chelsea’s new sporting director
  • Grant was first introduced to Abramovich three years ago by the agent Pini Zahavi

Abramovich brought in Grant and this was the beginning of the end for Mourinho. He threatened to leave the club at that point. Mourinho also didn’t get along so well with Frank Arnesen, Chelsea’s head of scouting and youth development, and Grant had a strong relationship with him.
It seems that the power stuggle was between Abramovich and Mourinho, and when the few loses piled up, and the team wasn’t playing the exciting football of Arsenal or with the style of Man U, the special one was cooked.
