How do you play defensive midfield? Who’s the best defensive midfielder in the world? Edgar Davids has played for some of the best soccer teams in the world: Ajax, Milan, Juventus, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Tottenham Hotspurs. Davids talks about how, as a defensive midfielder, you can surprise the opponent when you attack but also need to balance the team with possession (Makelele) and then bring energy to the team (Gattuso).

Not only is the defensive midfielder the key to the defense, and so they strong in the tackle, but they also need to have good technical skills to control the ball in one or two touches and move the ball from the defense into the attack.

Davids suffers from glaucoma, and is why he wears sunglasses or protective eye wear during the games.

Because of the way he plays with such energy and fight, he’s often called the Pitbull.

From Makelele to Kante, we profile the worlds best holding midfielders and ask what makes the perfect defensive midfielder.
