Sepak Takraw – Soccer Volleyball

Want to try playing a new sport that will help with your volleying skills? This video will give you a new perspective on the full volley.  A cross between Shaolin soccer and volleyball, this sport, called Sepak Takraw, puts a new swerve on soccer tennis or soccer volleyball.  It’s like a martial arts video game version of soccer.

Amazing. I’m sure Ibrahimovic would do while playing soccer volleyball what with his karate kicking skills. Talk about flexibility. It looks like in this sport the ball is about a size three soccer ball.

It reminds me a bit too of Brazilians playing volleyball on the beach with a soccer ball, but they’re using mostly their head to keep the ball up in the air and score points in a two versus two type of volleyball game.

Via Wikipedia:  Sepak takraw (Malay: “kick” and Thai: “takraw”) or kick volleyball is a sport native to Southeast Asia, resembling volleyball, except that it uses a rattan ball and only allows players to use their feet and head to touch the ball. A cross between football and volleyball, it is a popular sport in Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Laos, Philippines and Indonesia.

In Thailand, the game is simply called takraw. It is also thuck thay (Lao: “twine” and “kick”) while in Malaysia it is sometimes called sepak raga.
