Barcelona: The Possession Kings Are Back!

Lionel Messi is FC Barcelona’s hero once again as he scored the only goal of the evening against Granada. Quique Setien managed his first game as the Blaugrana’s coach. But what stands out for Barcelona fans, those who love the Tiki Taka style of play, is the possession total for Barcelona, which was  82%.

Barcelona Possession Total

In the days of Pep Guardiola a high possession total was the norm – Barcelona always had the soccer ball, not matter who they were playing against. It was terribly frustrating for opposing teams to try to win the ball from the Barcelona possession machine. Will this be the norm once again for Barcelona under Setien?

Barcelona completed 921 passes against Granada. That was the clubs third highest passing total since Guardiola took charge in 2008. I think that’s a stat that Barcelona fans will appreciate.  Now we will see if Barcelona can continue this Barcelona of old possession style of play against stronger competition. Can they put Cristiano Ronaldo in one of those passing triangles again?Let’s hope the Barcelona possession game is back and here to stay.
